The Liberal International Order in the Indo-Pacific

On June 24, 2024, Keio Center for Strategy (KCS), in collaboration with Nikkei Inc. and Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University, held a public symposium titled ‘The Liberal International Order in the Indo-Pacific’.

In session 2, titled ‘How to Confront Authoritarian States: Populism and the Crisis of Democracy’, the speakers explored the future of democracy, currently under threat. The discussion covered the historical evolution of democratic systems, the state of affairs  in so-called ‘Global South’ countries, and how to define regimes blending democracy and authoritarianism.
